Your SUV can provide you with lots of helpful information about both your vehicle and your drive. So, how do know what it's trying to tell you? Just take a look at your dashboard. To help drivers in Ithaca, Vestal, and Sayre understand all the most important symbols, Maguire Hyundai looks at the Hyundai Tucson dashboard lights.

Warning & Indicator Lights

The lights on your dashboard can tell you all sorts of things. Some of them are friendly reminders that a feature is active, while others let you know that you should schedule service or pull over and call for assistance. Some of the most common and important lights you should look out for include:

  • Electronic Stability Control Indicator - If you're driving through wet, slippery conditions, you may see a light flash that looks like a car on a winding road. This is just to let you know that the Electronic Stability Control has kicked into action to provide you with better handling.
  • Malfunction Indicator - You probably know this light as your Check Engine light. It looks like your engine and can be triggered by a few different things, but usually if it's on it's a sign that there's been a malfunction with your emissions control system.
  • Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light - Getting an oil change is an important part of your routine maintenance. If you're overdue for one, you'll eventually see a dashboard light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can. Continuing to drive without enough oil can cause problems with your engine.
  • ABS Warning Light - If there's a malfunction with your anti-lock braking system, you'll see a light with the letters ABS inside a circle. You'll still be able to stop safely but get these looked at right away.
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning Indicator - When one or more of your tires is low on air, you'll see a logo that looks like a tire with an exclamation mark in the center. If the light remains on after you've checked the air pressure or added more air, there may be a malfunction with the system.
  • Charging System Warning Light - A light that looks like your car battery means that there's either a problem with your electrical system, a fault in your alternator, or you need a new battery. Rather than pulling over, drive straight to the service center. If you turn the engine off, you may not be able to start the car again.
  • Parking Brake & Brake Fluid Warning Light - When you start your car, you'll see the word BRAKE with a couple circles above it. All three of these icons should go away once you disengage the parking brake. If they remain on, it means that you're low on brake fluid. It's not safe to drive with insufficient brake fluid.
