Midsize sedans like the Hyundai Sonata and Ford Fusion are the kind of cars you can rely on for everything from your daily commute to a family road trip. So, which one has more of what you're looking for in your next sedan?

To help drivers and families in Ithaca, Vestal, and Sayre decide, Maguire Hyundai looks at what each one has to offer in this Hyundai Sonata vs. Ford Fusion comparison.

Fuel Economy

The Hyundai Sonata offers a lineup of sporty powertrains that can keep the drive going with excellent fuel economy. The base engine is a 2.4L 4-cylinder that gets up to 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. This delivers a fun drive and can get up to an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 35 MPG highway.*

The Ford Fusion also has lots of engines to choose from, but none of them are as efficient as the Hyundai. For example, the base powertrain for the Fusion is a 2.5L 4-cylinder that can only get up to an EPA-estimated 21 MPG city and 31 MPG highway. It can't provide you with quite as much power, either, with only 175 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.

Safety & Driver-Assistance Features

The Hyundai Sonata was named a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned this safety rating because its design features an energy-absorbing steering column, along with front and rear crumple zones that direct the energy from a collision away from the interior.

The interior is protected by seven airbags, including side-curtain airbags that cover both rows of seats. Up front, you can use your dashboard monitor to see what's behind you by using the rearview camera.

There are also lots of driver-assistance features on board that can help prevent accidents. For example, the standard Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist will give you more awareness of what's around you during your drive.

The Ford Fusion was not able to earn the same safety rating from IIHS. While its airbag system does offer lots of protection, and similar driver-assistance features are available, its frame doesn't feature any crumple zones or energy-absorbing features.

Infotainment Systems

During your drive, the Hyundai Sonata makes it easy to enjoy your favorite music and stay connected. It has a standard 7-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard. When you're not backing up, it serves as the home of your infotainment system.

A Bluetooth® hands-free phone system is standard, as well, so you can make calls and stream your favorite music and podcasts. You'll also be able to use your favorite smartphone streaming apps with standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.

The Ford Fusion also features a Bluetooth®-compatible infotainment system. However, its SYNC® system only features a 4.2-inch LCD screen. Plus, features like a touchscreen, Apple CarPlay™, and Android Auto™ don't come standard on every trim level.
