The Hyundai Sonata includes lots of technology that can help you have a safe and efficient drive. One of the systems that can help keep your car that way for a long time are your dashboard lights. They're designed to let you know when your parts need service or maintenance. So, what do they mean?

Maguire Hyundai finds out for drivers in Ithaca, Vestal, and Sayre with this run down of the Hyundai Sonata dashboard lights.

Dashboard Indicators, Warnings, and Alerts

The lights that line your dashboard and instrument cluster can tell you a lot about your Hyundai Sonata and your drive. From letting you know when a feature has been turned on to helpful maintenance reminders or alerts that you should stop the car and call for service, these icons offer lots of information. Some of the lights you should look out for include:

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp - You probably know this as the Check Engine light because it looks like an engine. Usually this comes on when there's a malfunction with the vehicle's emissions control system.
  • Electronic Stability Control - If you're driving on wet, slippery roads, you may see a light that shows a car driving around a curve. This is there to let you know that your sedan's Electronic Stability Control feature has kicked into action. You may also see it with the word OFF underneath the logo once it's been turned off.
  • Engine Oil Pressure - An oil change is one of the most basic parts of routine maintenance. It's also one of the most important. If your Hyundai Sonata is overdue for one, you'll eventually see a red light that looks like an old-fashioned oil can. Continuing to drive with low or old oil can damage your engine, so pull over quickly.
  • Electric Power Steering - A light that looks like your steering wheel is often accompanied by some resistance when you turn the wheel. This means there's a problem with your power steering system.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System - If any of your tires, including the spare, are low on air, you'll see the TPMS light. It even looks like flat tire.
  • Anti-Lock Brake System - The letters ABS mean that there's been a malfunction with your ant-lock braking system. You can still slow down using your main brakes but get this serviced right away.
  • Charing System - A light that looks like a battery can mean that there's a problem with the electrical system, the alternator is bad, or your need a new battery. Don't turn the car off if you see this. Instead, drive directly to a service center.
  • Engine Coolant Temperature - If your engine is ever low on coolant, your car will let you know with a light that looks like a thermometer. This also means that your engine is starting to overheat, so pull over, turn the engine off, and let it cool down before adding more coolant.
