The Hyundai Santa Fe is a reliable SUV that's great for everything from camping trips to your daily commute. Like every vehicle on the road though, it may need service once in a while, and uses symbols on the dashboard to let you know when. So, what do these symbols mean anyway?

To help drivers in Ithaca, Vestal, and Sayre understand what your SUV is trying to tell you, Maguire Hyundai looks at some of the most important Hyundai Santa Fe dashboard lights.

Yellow Indicator Lights

Yellow lights are used to let you know when there's been a malfunction. These usually aren't urgent, but you shouldn't ignore them. When you see a yellow light, schedule service as soon as you can. A few of the lights you should be aware of are:

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp - Most of the time you'll hear this referred to as your Check Engine light because it looks like your engine. It can be caused by a few things, but usually it means there's a problem with your emissions control system.
  • Anti-lock Brake System - The letters ABS are a sign that there's an issue with your anti-lock brake system. You can still slow down safely but get this looked at soon.
  • Low Tire Pressure - A horseshoe shaped light that looks like a flat tire means that one or more of your tires are low on air.

Red Warning Lights

Red lights are a more serious warning that your SUV needs service immediately. In most cases, it's not good for your vehicle or safe for you to keep driving. Some of the red lights you should watch out for include:

  • Engine Oil Pressure - If you're overdue for an oil change, you'll eventually see a light that looks like an old oil can. Continuing to drive without enough oil can damage your engine.
  • Charging System - When you see a light that looks like your car battery, it's a sign that either you have a low battery or a faulty alternator. This is one warning light where you shouldn't pull over. If you turn the vehicle off, you may not be able to start it again. Instead, try to save power by turning off features like the infotainment system and drive straight to a service center.
  • Electric Power Steering - This light looks like your wheel and may be accompanied by some resistance when you turn the wheel. It's caused by a malfunction with your power steering system.
  • Parking Brake & Brake Fluid - When you start your SUV, you should see the word BRAKE with two circles above it. These should all go away once you disengage the parking brake. If you don't have the parking brake on, it means there's either a problem with your parking brake or you don't have enough brake fluid to stop safely.
