Compact sedans like the Hyundai Elantra and Mazda3 offer impressive fuel economy and more interior space than meets the eye. So, which one has everything you want in your next car? Maguire Hyundai helps drivers in Ithaca, Vestal, and Sayre decide with this Hyundai Elantra vs. Mazda3 comparison.

Hyundai Elantra vs Mazda3 Fuel Economy

The Hyundai Elantra offers excellent fuel economy with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine. This powertrain was designed with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) and works with a Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). Together, they help it get up to an EPA-estimated 31 MPG city and 41 MPG highway.

The Mazda3 runs on a SKYACTIV®-G 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that also gets good gas mileage but requires more stops at the pump. It can only get up to an EPA-estimated 26 MPG city and 35 MPG highway[i].

Hyundai Elantra vs Mazda3 Interior Dimensions

The Hyundai Elantra and Mazda3 both feature seating for up to five people. Each sedan also gives you a choice between cloth and leather seats, as well as available power adjustable front seats. The Hyundai offers more room to relax though. The Mazda3 can feel like a tighter squeeze with less passenger room.

For easy access to the trunk, or loading cargo through to the interior, there are standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats in both sedans. The Hyundai also has more storage space. There's 14.4 cubic feet of trunk space, while the Mazda3 has only 13.2 cubic feet of cargo room.

While both cars offer heated front seats for the winter, the Hyundai Elantra is just as prepared for summer. A power tilt-and-slide sunroof is available. The Mazda only offers a moonroof.

Hyundai Elantra vs Mazda3 Safety

The Hyundai Elantra was named a 2019 TOP SAFETY PICK+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It earned this award with seven standard airbags, including a driver's knee airbag and side-curtain airbags that cover both rows of seats.

The cabin is also protected by front and rear crumple zones and an energy absorbing steering column. Front seatbelt pretensioners come standard as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) in the back seats.

There are also lots of driver assistance features to give you more awareness during your drive and prevent accidents. Some of the standard features include:

  • Rearview Camera with Dynamic Guidelines
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Driver Attention Warning

The Mazda3 also features side-curtain airbags, LATCH, and many of the same driver assistance features. However, without the same solid, energy absorbing design, it wasn't able to earn the same safety awards from IIHS.
